New Flavour: Autumn
June 21, 2006.     Douglas Nerad

Rob Garth has kindly submitted his Autumn flavour to the Blosxom community. No word on whether he's fixed some Internet Explorer bug but I agree that anyone using Windows would probably be better -and safer- using Firefox...

You can download the Autumn theme from Rob's site (local download here).

New Flavour: Gila
February 09, 2006.

Mark Ferrari has whipped together a new flavour called Gila. Mark says, "Originally based on the OSWD template by Haran. It comes bundled with the "menu" plugin ... read the readme.. change the path to the .css file and you are up and running."

You can read more about the flavour and download it here (local download here).

New Flavour: Kubrick
March 27, 2005.

Michael Calleia has ported Kubrick to Blosxom. It will take some work on your part to get it looking like that (adding graphics and such) but the basics are there. You can download it here.

A Better RSS 2.0 Template
January 18, 2005.

Hal Halvorsen wrote in to let us know he has a new and improved set of templates for RSS 2.0 (as flavour files). "This is what I believe is a cleaner and better RSS 2.0 template for Blosxom. I wrote it because I had some problems with the original RSS 2.0 template by Mike Mason (but big credit to Mike for his version)." He has detailed notes you should read before downloading (local download here).

'New' Template Components for Flavours
December 13, 2004.
User deafiant (aka: Mark) discovered some previously undocumented template components that can be used in flavours and themes. Each one is a time element.
$dw: refers to the day of the week. Mon, Tue, Wed, etc.
$ti: refers to the time on a 24 hour clock (eg: 22:36).
$hr12: refers to the time on a 12 hour clock (apparently without minutes).
$ampm: places an AM or PM based on the time.
You can fine more template components here and, apparently, a few that might still be hidden in the Blosxom CGI...!

Blosxom Themes
June 09, 2004.
There has been much confusion regarding the theme plugin and its installation and usage. I hope here to explain as clearly as possible for newcomers how to install, configure, use and create themes for their sites. This article will show how to install, configure and create themes (a basic HTML theme in this article) using the theme plugin and a text editor. (click here to read more...)

Blosxom Flavour Files
April 06, 2004.
Blosxom is brilliant in the various ways you can create webpages that look so different, from this site, to OOKEE.com to Fletcher Penney's site (and it's many variations) to Jason Clark's site and many many more. These differences are accounted for through flavour files which allow you to create almost anything. Most other blog systems allow for this sort of customization, but it is very difficult. This is why so many blogs look (almost) exactly the same.

Blosxom does have a default template built into the CGI, but the fun comes from building your own look and feel. There are a variety of ways of going about it. I will usually build a page from scratch, designing how it should look without regard to Blosxom and its needs. When I'm done I section the file into the various necessary flavour files.

In my first attempts I actually "borrowed" HTML from other people's sites and customized their code to what I wanted and needed. These days I will build the page using either Macromedia Dreamweaver or more commonly Bare Bones BBEdit. (click here to read more...)
